The Women’s Champ triples and Men’s Champ pairs were played over the weekend 02 2nd and 3rd November 2024.

The women played on Knightsbridge green which is playing very well and the men on Mayfair which is still coming up to speed.

The weather was fine, but very cool on both days and strong winds, particularly on Sunday, made for tricky bowling conditions.

The women had a field of eight triples teams for qualifying, with two and three winners qualifying.

Five of the eight teams made post section so one game was played first up on Sunday to eliminate the bye.

Elaine McClintock, Judi Farkash and Kerin Roberts played Rachel Long, Marie Cooper and Muy Chhour.

This was a very close game that went to the wire with Rachel’s team coming out the winners 14-13.

In the semi-finals, Rachel’s team played Joy Watkinson, Julie Chhour and Theresa Rogers. Mother against daughter, once again this season mother came out on top.

Joys team got away to a good lead but with Muy leading well, Marie consistently coming in with those red bowls and Rachel playing some amazing shots with her bright red bowls they came back and took the win 20-16.

In the other semi-final Sheryl Wellington, Jan Gledhill and Colleen Rice beat Geraldine Wright, Glenda Rountree and Lorna Donald. Another close game early on but Sheryl’s team finished strong winning 18-11.

So to the final, a long day for Rachel’s team with three games back to back.

Another close one, the less experienced team of Rachel, Marie and Muy continued to bowl well and with one end to go led the more fancied team of Sheryl, Jan and Colleen 16-15.

But a three to Sheryl and her team and they claimed the win 18-16. A very good game with some excellent bowls.

Well done to Sheryl Wellington, Jan Gledhill and Colleen Rice. Special mention should go to Rachel Long, Marie Cooper and Muy Chhour.

Did they bowl well or what!! All three played their part and they had the top teams constantly under pressure.

Ironically they beat Sheryl’s team in qualifying 21-10. They should be very proud of their efforts.

A field of twelve men’s pairs turned up for qualifying, two and three winners to go through to post section.

Round three had all teams playing with a number of teams looking for a second win.

But after three rounds were concluded, there were only four qualifiers.

We had two three winners,  Ian Coombe and John Valentine and also Bruce McClintock and Gerry Strydom.

The two, two winners were last year’s champions, Wayne Glogoski and Barry McCrystal along with David Payne and Phill Chisholm.

Sunday, we were straight into semi-finals.

David Payne and Phil Chisholm raced into a 6-2 lead over Gerry Strydom and Bruce McClintock.

Gerry and Bruce responded and levelled at 8 all. After 14 ends it was 11-10 to Gerry and Bruce and they ran out the winners 16-11 with some excellent bowls.

Wayne Glogoski and Barry McCrystal played Ian Coombe and John Valentine in a repeat of last year’s final.

Ian and John started well and were very accurate leading 10-1, the next four ends went to Wayne and Barry and at the hallway point it was 12 all.

Wayne and Barry took the lead  17-14 after 13 ends but time was running out.

They managed three more ends before time was up with Ian and John winning those three ends to take the win 21-17.

The final: Coombe and Valentine v Strydom and McClintock.

Unfortunately the Coombe/Valentine team struggled and Strydom/McClintock were on their game from the get-go and controlled the game.

They ran out winners 20-4 with the game conceded.

Well done to Gerry and Bruce.
