The Milford 5000 was run last weekend, we had two teams entered, please find a report from the skip of each of those teams!!!
Report by Glenda Rountree, Such a well-run tournament hosting 32 teams from North Harbour, Auckland and as far away as Omokoroa. The teams were of such a high standard so competition was pretty tough.
Morning tea and lunch was provided – so good not to have to worry about making lunch for 2 days!!
Day One :
The team of Jane McKay – Hanaan Shahwan – Glenda Rountree played their first 4 games on Saturday on star weed and it took a while to get used to the speed and of course the wind!! Always the wind!! We managed to win one game – very pleased with ourselves as we were 9-1 down in the first half of the game but managed to claw our way back winning 12-11 …..yay! Not good enough to go into the championship though so into the Plate on the Sunday. (They also played Millie, Chad and Will from Birkenhead) winners from the previous two years.
Day Two :
No wind on Sunday morning but a few showers. Off to a good start and won our first 2 games – lost our third game by 1 on the last end and lost our fourth. So not too bad!
Oh well there is always next year!!
Milford 5000 Tournament Recap- Barry Baillie.
It was a privilege to compete in a tournament featuring 32 strong teams from Auckland and beyond. The team of Rosemary Nicol, Graeme McGregor, and Barry Baillie stepped up to the challenge, with Flora Macdonald, unfortunately, becoming a late withdrawal as she continues to recover from an unfortunate accident leading up to the event. Flora, we wish you all the best in your recovery and look forward to seeing you back on the green soon!
Day 1: Qualifying Round
The goal for the opening day was clear: secure a top-16 finish to advance to the championship round. The team combined well, recording impressive wins against Royal Oak (15-11), Carlton Cornwall (20-11), and Hobsonville (20-4).
The final match of the day saw us up against Birkenhead’s Millie Nathan, William Tonga, and Chad Nathan. Unfortunately, it was a one-sided affair, with Birkenhead delivering a bowling masterclass and handing us a humbling 4-20 defeat. Millie and her team were in sensational form. Despite the loss, our three wins were enough to advance to the championship round.
Day 2: Championship Round
Our opening game against Orewa saw Rosemary on fire, carrying the team to a hard-fought 10-5 victory. The next two matches, however, proved challenging, with losses to Milford (6-14) and Howick (6-10) as we struggled to find our rhythm.
The final match of the day was a rematch against Birkenhead, who had given us a tough lesson the day before. This time, the tables turned. Rediscovering our form and combining well as a team, we led from start to finish, recording a satisfying 10-7 win to close the tournament on a high note.
Results:
The tournament concluded with Manly taking both 1st and 2nd place with four wins each, followed by Milford in 3rd with three wins. Several teams finished with two wins, including Mairangi Bay, with our team finishing 7th based on net points.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable tournament, with each team member contributing to some excellent bowls. Congratulations to this year’s winners, Manly, and a big thank-you to our supporters. We’re already looking forward to next year’s event!
Great reports from our two skips who were right in the action and well done to both teams.
This is a really tough tournament, well done to Barry’s team for making the top section and finishing 7th.
Alan Daniels.
Winners Andy, Shaun and Matt below and also the first and second teams from Manly.
