The Men’s singles club champs was held over the weekend.
It was a lovely fine weekend, without the strong gusty winds that have prevailed recently, although the wind did get up a little bit later in the afternoon on both days. We had twenty-four entries, each player would play three rounds and also mark a fourth round. We needed three additional markers for each round.
We were able to complete all four rounds on Saturday, meaning we could go straight into the post section on Sunday. Three and two winners qualified for the post section. Eleven players qualified for post-section, which meant we had five byes in the first round. Peter Orgias, Leon Wech, Bruce McClintock, Murray Radojkovich and Alan Telford got the byes.
In the first round of post-section, Ron Horne played Phill Chisholm, Ronnie played some great bowls to beat Phill 21-14.
David Payne was always in control against Kevin Cameron winning 21-8.
Gordon Jenkins and Michael Thomas had a great game. Both started well but Gordon edged ahead, Michael came back and got in front but Gordon won the last two ends to win 21-20.
To the quarter finals, Leon Wech beat Peter Orgias. Peter led early but Leon found his range and took the lead, Peter came back, it was 14 all after 17 ends. Leon won the last five ends to take the win 21-14.
Bruce McClintock beat Murray Radojkovich 21-4, playing very accurate bowls, the score was 4 all, then Bruce won the last 8 ends.
Alan Telford beat Ron Horne 21-4, Ron did not find the form of his earlier game against Phill, whilst Alan bowled very controlled bowls.
David Payne beat Gordon Jenkins 21-11, David started very well and kept the pressure on and Gordon could not get back into the game.
The semi-finals, Leon Wech played Bruce McClintock, Leon took the early lead, Bruce responded well with excellent draw bowls and lead 8-4 after 6 ends. After 12 ends it was 11-10 to Bruce, Leon won 5 of the last 7 ends winning 21-14.
Alan Telford played David Payne, David again started really well and lead 14-6 after 12 ends and looking likely for a big win. Alan picked up his game and won 7 of the next 8 ends, 17 all after 21 ends. David kept his cool and won the last two ends for a 21-17 win.
The Final, this was marked as by tradition, by the president of the club ,Tony Stanaway.
Leon Wech v David Payne.
Leon had never won the singles and David was going for three in a row. It was 3 all after 4 ends, then 7 all after 8 ends. The next 5 ends were crucial, which Leon won and was now leading 16-7. Leon was bowling really well and led 17-8 but back came David, winning 3 ends in a row, two of those when Leon was holding a 3 and David came in to take the shot, score now 17-13 Leon. Leon grabbed a 2 on the next end to lead 19-13 but David replied with 2, 19-15, but Leon picked up a 3 on the last to win 21-15.
A really good game with Leon being a worthy winner. Well done to David for making the final again.
Congratulations Leon Wech, Men’s Singles Champion.
