The Grove Orewa, Bowls North Harbour, Women’s pairs and Men’s singles were played over the weekend. The weather was mainly fine but again strong gusty winds prevailed.
The Grove Orewa Women’s Pairs
The women played at Mairangi Bay and Milford on Saturday and Mairangi Bay on Sunday.
In section 1, Gaye Horne and Joy Watkinson lost to Judi Farkash and Glenda Rountree 17-18. Gaye and Joy won their second game but did not play their third as they could not qualify.
Judi and Glenda won their second game and needed to beat Maureen Howden and Jan Harrison in the final game to qualify. They were down early but fought back, but not quite enough and went down 19-20.
Section 2, Elaine McClintock and Kerin Roberts had three strong wins to top their section.
Section 3, Jan Gledhill and Colleen Rice won their first two games. They played one of the favourites in the final game, Lisa Dickson and Lauren Mills. Both teams with two wins, the winner will top the section. The Takapuna team were too good winning 20-11.
Section 4, the mum and daughter team of Muy and Julie Chhour teamed up. They had one win and two narrow losses to some very experienced teams. They lost to Jenni Hart and Sharon Parker 19-21. They then beat Keiko Kurohara and Jan Calcott 14-10. Then they lost to the Lin East Browns Bay team 15-16. So close and a great effort by the Chhour’s.
Section 6, Sheryl Wellington and Theresa Rogers, previous winners of this championship had three big wins to win their section.
Finals day Sunday.
Maureen Howden and Jan Harrison and Elaine McClintock and Kerin Roberts both had a bye.
Lisa Dickson and Lauren Mills beat Lin East and Pauline Connors 22-13.
Sheryl Wellington and Theresa Rogers beat Wendy Jensen and Trish Hardy 17-16 in a really close game.
Semi Finals.
Elaine and Kerin beat Maureen and Jan 18-9.
Lisa and Lauren beat Sheryl and Theresa 18-15; this was really close early on, Lisa picked up a two on the 15th end to lead 13-10, but Sheryl picked up a five on the 16th to lead 15-13, but a one and then a four in the last two ends gave Lisa and Lauren the win 18-15.
Final.
Lisa and Lauren v Elaine and Kerin. It was close early on with the score tied at four all, but then Lisa and Lauren took control of the game and came out the winners 14-4 for a well-deserved win.
Well done to Elaine and Kerin for making the final.
The Grove Orewa Men’s singles.
Phill Chishom playing at Helensville, lost his first game, won his second and then lost his third game 20-21.
David Payne also playing at Helensville had a great day winning all three games.
Wayne Glogoski playing at Takapuna lost his first two games and did not play his third.
Barry Baillie also playing at Takapuna, lost his first game but won his second 21-14 and then lost his third game. Well done to Barry for entering this top event, currently in his third year of bowls, he will have learnt a lot from this experience.
Finals round one, David Payne beat Sean Mulholand from Helensville 21-19.
In the quarter final David lost to Gordon Smith from Riverhead 21-10. Still a top effort by David.
Gordon then won his semi-final beating Neil Fisher 21-20.
In the other semi-final, Bart Robertson from Helensville beat Damon Pierson from Birkenhead 21-15.
Final.
Bart Robertson beat Gordon Smith 21-10. That was the 6th time that Bart had won the Bowls North Harbour Men’s Singles Championship
