Report by Alan Daniels – 1 to 5 Year Bowler Convenor
Subject: 1-5 Singles.
Saturday and Sunday saw the running of the 1-5 Men`s Singles.
We had a field of 10 bowlers. Unfortunately we had the withdrawal of Michael Thomas one of the early favourites before the start. A big thank you to Rick Dixon who turned up to play after the passing of their family dog on Friday night.
The field included two 1st year bowlers, Steve Bartley and Graeme Storey, both bowled some very good bowls but found that the more experienced bowlers were just a little too good. It was a great experience for them and we look forward to seeing them in the 1st year singles in April.
With Barry Butcher and Rick Dixon not getting wins we ended up with five two winners to play on Sunday. Bill Lowe who was in excellent form in qualifying, played Stuart Mackay in a playoff game to see who would join the other three semi-finalists. Bill continued his excellent form to beat Stuart 21-12.
To the semi-finals:
Ian McGovern plays Roger Potter and Graeme McGregor plays Bill Lowe.
Ian started very well and got to a big lead, Roger found his line and steadily chipped away and caught up to Ian. Roger continued to bowl very well winning 21-17.
Graeme started off well against Bill and when Bill was holding shots Graeme would come in with the last shot. Graeme bowled very consistently and ended up with a strong win 21-7.
To the FINAL which was marked very well by Ian McGovern.
Graeme was on fire early on and got out to a 9-1 lead. Roger came back with a 3 , a 4 and another 3 with beautiful draw bowls. Not to be outdone Graeme grabbed a 2 and a 1 before Roger grabbed another 1. 12 all anyone’s game. Two more ends 13 all. Two more strong ends for Graeme 15-12 , Roger gets one back, 15-13. 1 to Graeme 16-13 and another 17-13. Roger strikes back 17-15 but Graeme not to be denied edges away 19-15 and then 20-15 but Roger grabs a 2, 20-17. Graeme is holding 3, Roger with the draw so close, very nearly, but only second shot, Graeme retains the Trophy 21-17.
Well done Graeme to win back to back and to Roger so close.
A great game to watch with a high standard of bowls.
A Big Thank you to David Pearse running the event.
