The National Interclub 7’s were held at Wellington on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

This is what confronted the team on Friday morning for their first game.

The team flew down on Thursday after their flight was delayed.

Contingency plans were in place to deal with all-weather interruptions.

They went to Plan B on the Friday, which meant synthetic greens and the sections reduced to three teams instead of six and the winner of each section to proceed to finals.

Our team was unchanged.

Singles: Theresa Rogers, Pairs: Elaine McClintock and Kerin Roberts, Fours: Sheryl Wellington, Jan Gledhill, Colleen Rice and Julie Chhour.

First up, after a delayed start was the very strong Burnside team from Canterbury in light rain at Johnsonville.

Theresa played Tayla Bruce, NZ Blackjack, Theresa played extremely well going down 16-21.  Elaine and Kerin won 24-4, Sheryl, Jan, Colleen and Julie won 22-6.

A win 2-1. An excellent start.

Burnside beat Kerikeri (Northland)  3-0 in the afternoon with Mairangi having the bye.

Saturday morning, they played Kerikeri at a club called Wilton, the rain had stopped, win this game and they were in the quarterfinals.

With one end to go in the pairs they were heading to the finals. Theresa had won her singles 21-14 and the fours had gone down 7-12.

Elaine and Kerin were 2 up on the board and holding 2 shots.

The Kerikeri skips second bowl came in with weight, wicked off another bowl and moved the jack close to the boundary line, they were now holding  2, Elaine needed to draw and get second shot. Unfortunately she had the perfect green but came up a little short, the Kerikeri skip then drew another shot for a 3 and the win 19-18.

A 2-1 loss, all three teams in the section ended up with a win but Burnside had a 3-0 win over Kerikeri which was enough to give them top position in the section. So close for our team.

They were gutted, to come all that way, with financial support from the Bias fund and also the club and to only play two games and then to come up short on their goal, they felt they had let people down.

But that is bowls as they say, with the weather having a major impact early on.

Wilton bowling club.

Burnside won their quarter final 2-1 against Pirongia (Waikato) but lost their semi-final 2-1 to Raumati (Kapiti Coast) .

Stoke from Nelson with a very experienced team beat Raumati 2-1 to take the title.

In the Men’s, Browns Bay lost both of their pool section games.

The final was won by Central Cambridge from Waikato over Paritutu from Taranaki 2-1.
