At yesterday’s triples we had a celebratory morning tea to celebrate the 99th birthday of our legend bowler John Miles. His actual birthday was on Monday so we organised a lovely day and a surprise morning tea. Caryl joined John for the morning tea which also was a nice surprise.
President Tony Stanaway spoke some nice words noting that John has been a member for forty years. He also presented John with a bowls cloth with the inscription ‘Grumpy Old Bowler.’ Grumpy being one of Johns bowls nicknames. I have a few more I cannot repeat. Tony mooted that once John achieves the 100 year milestone, the Club should give him free drinks forever.
The issue is that John tells me he wants to make 106. So if John was to play say a 100 games per year, and he buys his team two drinks each, that is $24 per day which is $2400 per year and over six years that is a total of $14,400. Can the club really afford this?? J
Big thanks to Gaye Horne, Joy Watkinson and Sheryl Wellington for putting on a scrumptious morning tea. There was lots of positive feedback. Also to Tony Stanaway for his kind words, John and Lynette Lindsay for getting Caryl there without John knowing, and Theresa for working the tournament schedule around the morning tea.
John is looking forward to next year, hitting the 100 year club and celebrating it with his fellow Mairangi Bay bowlers.
