The Champ of Champ men and women singles plus the 1-5 A/C pairs were played over the weekend.
The Singles were played at Hobsonville with the 1-5 pairs at Belmont and Omaha.
All finals on Sunday were transferred to the covered green at Orewa as the forecast for Sunday was for persistent rain.
Leon Wech and Theresa Rogers were our representatives in the champ of champs singles.
Leon had a bye in the first round and in round 2 he played Gerald van Tilborg from Northcote winning 21-16.
In the quarter final he played Kevin Rainsford from Manly. Kevin got away to a good lead 14-7 , but Leon clawed his way back with some excellent draw bowls.
Leon lead 18-17. The next two ends Leon was holding multiple shots but Kevin came in with upshots and grabbed the last two ends to win 21-18.
Kevin then went on to win his semi-final and then the final against Colin Rogan from Browns Bay 21-11.
Theresa defeated Anne Osborn from Northcote 21-4 in her first round.
Second round she was up against the favourite Milly Nathan from Birkenhead.
Theresa started really well and was out to a 14-8 lead, Milly then won the next two ends with a one on each and then grabbed a four on the next end to make it 14 all.
Theresa then picked up a two but Milly came right back with a two to level at 16 all. Theresa jumped back into the lead with two to lead 18-16.
Milly then took a three on the next end and two on the final end to take the win 21-18. It was an excellent game with very little between the two bowlers.
Milly went on to win her semi-final and then defeated Deb Presland from Helensville 21-16 in the final.
Both of our players lost their quarter final to the eventual winner, well done Leon and Theresa.
Thank you to Phil Chisholm for marking one of the men’s singles.
Thanks to all the Mairangi Bay supporters who turned up to watch.
In the 1-5 any combination pairs we had two teams entered. Julie Chhour and Jodie Cottier playing at Belmont and also Barry Baillie and Graeme McGregor playing at Omaha.
Julie and Jodie were the only double female combination in their section, which made things tough for them at times.
They played some great draw bowls only to be taken out by weighted upshots.
Their result does not reflect how well they bowled and they will be even more determined next year.
We also need to remind ourselves that Jodie is still a first year bowler and has performed credibly in all tournaments she has entered.
They lost all their four games against some very strong teams.
Barry and Graeme had a very good first day.
They beat a Manly team 22-19, then a Hobsonville team 17-8, unfortunately they lost to Browns Bay 18-9 but won their last game 13-9 against Orewa.
Orewa also had three wins and topped the section on points differential edging Barry and Graeme into second spot but enough to qualify for the top eight.
In the quarter final they played Deanne Bronlund and Shane Don from Hobsonville, going down 18-15 in a close encounter with the Mairangi Bay team winning ten out of the eighteen ends.
Well done Barry and Graeme.
The final was won by Nick Cape and Brendon McPhail of Birkenhead over Mark Brown and Joanne Wyatt from Browns Bay 27-6.
This coming weekend is the Champ of Champ pairs, details to come.
