The winner of the jackpot (if there is a winner) is the team that has the differential which is drawn at random and it can be a positive or a negative differential. 
So you may lose a game, have a differential of minus 5 and if the number 5 comes out and then the negative is drawn, your team will win the jackpot (or share it if there is more than 1 team on minus 5).
