Such a busy time in the bowls calendar with many of our members away, heading away or representing North Habour in regional competitions. Even with all this activity our Saturday afternoon Haggle attracted good numbers which included many of our newest members. Remember the Saturday pm Haggle is open to all members, is a single entry event, with 3 games starting at 1:00 pm, mufti dress. The sheet for next Saturday is up in the glass cabinet at the main entrance.
The Mayfair Green was the venue for the Haggle this Saturday and in extremely hot (well extremely hot for Mairangi Bay) conditions and a breeze from the West, it was a matter of which team could best adapt on a slick, fast green, to the speed into the wind compared to the speed with a following wind.
No team managed three wins and there were two teams with 2 wins. In first place were Pat Clarke and Louis Ball who won their third game, thereby denying the only team that had had two wins after two rounds from taking out top spot. Well done Pat and Louise.
Second spot, and yes you guessed it, the team that had two wins and was edged out in the final game, was the team of Russell Parkinson, Stuart McKay and Bill Roan. Third place were Steve McGregor, Ian McGovern and Barry Butcher with one and a half wins, 11 ends and 21 points. Their result denied the unlucky team of Jim Price and David Trip from making the prize list as they had one less end to go with their one and a half wins.
An excellent afternoon of competitive yet casual bowls and a great opportunity for all members to sharpen their skills and mix with bowlers with a range of experience. Many thanks to Russell Parkinson and the team of willing helpers who set up the Mayfair Green and helped with the pack up.
While the Haggle was being played, there was a private function, a birthday party, up on the Harcourts Cooper & Co carpet green. The two Ricks did the hosting and supervision of the bowls and Garth provided them the opportunity to take in liquid refreshments from the bar. How fantastic it was to see a large group of young people having fun and experiencing our great game and the club facilities. Many thanks to Rick George and Ric Dixon. It is very reassuring to host such a nice polite and friendly bunch of young locals and to introduce them to the game of lawn bowls. They had a blast and indicated that they would be back for more some time soon. An excellent way to provide support for our local community.
