15 April 2020
Hello Members.
It is quite a while since we have enjoyed each other’s company both on the green and socially. I trust you are all in health and have managed so far to endure lockdown restrictions in your own “bubbles”. It has been difficult for us all but hopefully with conditions tracking in a positive direction there is light at the end of the tunnel and before too long we may be able to resume normal activities? Here’s hoping.
Meanwhile there are a few things to mention to bring you up to scratch.
A] GREENS
You will all be pleased to have learned that bowling clubs have received confirmation from government via Bowls NZ that restrictions regarding greens maintenance have been relaxed during the lockdown period. This edict is based on the facts that bowling greens are relatively isolated and that if maintenance is not continued then the valuable assets of greens will quickly deteriorate.
This comes as a great relief to bowling [and golf] clubs nationwide and we are grateful to government for this decision.
B] CLOSING DAY / PRIZE GIVING
This is in the program for Friday, 15 May starting at 1.00pm. There is a roll up at that time followed by afternoon tea and prize giving.
We are hopeful that this event will still be held as scheduled on the basis that with conditions improving the restrictions on gatherings may be lifted sufficiently to come together for the end of season.
Please note your diaries accordingly and we will update you nearer the time when we have more information regarding social gatherings.
C} ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Having an AGM is a constitutional requirement and is scheduled for the morning of Saturday, 20 June in the clubrooms. Likewise, this too will be subject to any social restrictions but as it is still two months away we should be OK?? In the event we are unable to meet, the required information will be given to you electronically ie Chairman’s Report, Audited Annual Accounts etc. We will be able to make a decision on whether we meet for an AGM nearer the time.
The AGM is also the time when club Officials, Board Members are appointed, a very important function. Over recent years there have been few changes in these positions and the Board has functioned very smoothly and efficiently in the administration of the club. However, while it is comforting to have continuity in this area, we must expect changes from time to time and other members must put themselves forward for administrative positions.
Reflecting this, I do not intent standing for President at the AGM in June. I have given much thought to this and my reasons are:-
a] I have been President for 10 of the last 12 years [the other two years were due to the two year presidential time limitation under the old constitution] and I think that period is a reasonable contribution.
b] it is important that there is some rotation / new blood coming through in senior positions.
This presidential change is only part of the need for change and for other members to step up and participate in the club’s administration. If we look back over recent years the club has been managed largely by the same hardworking group of dedicated and enthusiastic members. However, we need some new people to put their hands up. Please give this serious consideration – talk to a Board member and find out how you can help in running our successful club. Your assistance is needed.
In the meantime keep safe during this difficult period and with some good fortune we can all be together again in the near future.
Cheers, Bruce.
