On Waitangi day Thursday 6th February, the annual half-day State of Origin event was held. 48 members including some of our newer bowlers took part and everyone in some way or another wore their colours. Sadly, Annie’s knotted hankie did not make a second appearance.
13 Teams were organized based on their origin, including for the first time in many years a Chiefs Team. Due to odd numbers 3 Barbarians (mixed teams) were created making a total of 16 Teams.
After 3 games in the afternoon sun everyone headed to the bar for a quenching drink, a big thank you to Colleen. Following a drink or two and the drawing of the raffle the prizes were awarded with the Lions 3 Team of Jo Baxter, John Smith & Enid De Cesare taking first place.
They were closely followed by Barbarians 3 Team of David Payne, Alison Rennie & Graeme McGregor in second place. Lying third was Barbarians 2 Team of Judi Farkash, Paul Dean & Joy Finney. In fourth place was the Lions 3 Team of Ron Horne, Glenda Rountree & Tony Trent. Lucky dip going to Blues 1 Team.
Later 36 players and guests enjoyed a Chinese meal organized by Sandra & Ian Coombe. This event was the last to be attended by Gaye & Ron Horne who are off to pastures new in the South Island. We wish them well.
