Last Sunday saw another winter tournament for the 1-8 year bowlers.

This time the Stanaway Trophy fours held at Manly bowling club.

Each team had to have at least two 1-5 year players.

This year saw a major increase to the prize money and Auckland club  teams were able to enter.

Those Auckland teams were able to win the prize money but were not eligible to win the trophy.

We had two teams entered  :

Judi Farkash, Glyn Taylor, Flora Macdonald and Louise Ball.

Roger Potter, Pat Smith, Graeme Storey and Annie McGrath.

Here is a summary of their day from each of the teams.

Glyn Taylor.

As is usual for this tournament conditions were cold and windy.
We started well with a good 14-9 win against Sunnybrae.

Our second match against Mangawhai was much closer with the lead swapping several times. Going into the last end, we were holding a slender one shot lead and holding shot with two bowls remaining in the game.

Unfortunately their skip, who was excellent throughout the match, was on the money again drawing shot with his first bowl to level the match and almost took the win with his second getting close enough to warrant a measure which went in our favour. So, a 9 – 9 draw and a fair reflection on the game.

In the afternoon we moved from A green where there was a cross wind all morning, to the B green where the wind was blowing lengthwise, so now it was quick bowling away from the clubhouse but like bowling on treacle coming back the other way.

Our first game in the afternoon was against a strong Papatoetoe team, who finished the day with 3 wins, going down 6-13.

Our last match was against Hobsonville who picked up a 5 on the first end and ran out very deserved 7-14 winners.

Results aside we had a fantastic day and enjoyed the great spirit in which each of our games were played.

Manly did a fantastic job (again) in hosting.

Mairangi Bay Roger Potter Team.

Basic Results

L  5 ends,  10  15  Manly 2

L  5 ends,  6  14  Mangawhai

L  2 ends,  5  19  St Heliers

L  4 ends  10 13 Orewa

Played 2 games in the morning on the new carpet (normal) and the afternoon on the old carpet (fast).

The morning games resulted in a pattern of building early around the jack and losing position at the end by good opposition bowls or some unfortunate bump bowls resulting in the odd high end counts against.

The afternoon games were affected by not adapting to the wind, fast green and cold. In summary some good and some indifferent form transpired as a result, but that’s bowls.

It is noted Manly 2 and St Helier’s were major prize winners and deserved their wins in the competition.

First place and the Stanaway Trophy went to the Shaun Goldsbury skipped Manly team.
Second was St Helier’s with Orewa finishing third.

The trophy was presented, by our own Tony Stanaway.

The final event is the Sorrill Cup which will be held on Sunday 18th August at Browns Bay, where we have four teams entered.
