Last weekend was the Men and Women Bowls North Harbour champ of champ triples.
The men were at Mahurangi East on the Saturday and the women at Manly. All finals were played at Manly on the Sunday.
Our women’s team of Elaine McClintock, Irene Donaldson and Kerin Roberts were looking to continue the success of our Mairangi Bay women for this current season.
And indeed they did just that.
First up they played Beachhaven and had a very big win 27-6.
Next up in the quarter final was Hobsonville, another strong win 21-10.
The semi-final was against a strong Birkenhead team of Millie Nathan, Lauranne Croot and Connie Mathieson.
It was close early, but the Mairangi team found their rhythm on the fast Manly green with Irene playing really well. They forged ahead for another strong win 21-7.
The final was against Manly: Trish Croot, Skye Renes and Judy Smith, another strong team as you would expect in a final.
This was a close game, Mairangi were behind early, they were down 8-11, but manged to catch up and edge ahead, they were up 16-13 with one end to go. Mairangi were holding one and Trish went for the big shot but missed so Mairangi Bay were the champions, winning 17-13.
The result provided Elaine with her 20th title and a third bar to add to her gold star.
Also with this victory, Kerin won her 11th title and Irene her third centre championship.
Well done ladies!!!!!
Our men’s team was Leon Wech, John Gledhill and Gerry Strydom.
They had a bye in the first round. In round 2, they played Milford winning 14-10. Mairangi struggled early on with Milford playing short ends but they managed to get the mat back and play longer ends.
In the quarter final they played Birkenhead, William Tonga, Evan Thomas and Chad Nathan. This was a very tight game, close all the way. They were down 4-0 after four ends but managed to get back to 6 all and then 10 all with two ends to play. The Mairangi lads managed a single shot on those two ends to take the win 12-10.
A great result against a very good team.
Sunday meant a shift to Manly for the finals, Manly being much quicker, very different to Saturday. They were up against Riverhead in the semi-final, Steve Cox, Gordon Smith and Duane McDonald, a very experienced team.
Riverhead started very well and adapted to the speed much quicker than Mairangi, using short ends to their advantage. Mairangi were much more competitive in the second half of the game but Riverhead held on to their lead winning 17-12.
Our team were happy with their result, losing to a Riverhead team that had included the COC pairs winners from the previous week.
Riverhead went on to win the final against Orewa 18-8.
