The last two Fridays, Cadness cup bonus fours were played. The Women were at Manly and the Men at Milford. The weather was amazing both days and some excellent bowls were played.
We had two teams entered in both the Women and the Men. The pressure was on as Mairangi Bay had won both cups last year.
Women: Our teams were:
Dolphins: Glenda Rountree, Judi Farkash, Jo Baxter and Joy Watkinson. Rachel Long replaced Glenda on the second day with Judi going to skip.
Pearls: Geraldine Wight, Lorna Donald, Hanaan Shahwan and Kerin Roberts. Sheryl Wellington replaced Kerin Roberts on the second day with Lorna going to lead.
There were only six teams entered, two from Mairangi Bay, so a five round robin was played. Bonus points from the lead and the two are crucial in this competition.
The Dolphins played the Pearls in the first round and bowled really well to take the win 27-17.
Second round the Pearls beat Orewa 24-11 and the Dolphins beat Warkworth 17-15.
Third Round the Pearls beat Takapuna 27-12 and the Dolphins lost to Orewa 21-15.
Fourth round Pearls beat Warkworth 24-16 and the Dolphins beat the unbeaten Mahurangi East by 26-13.
One round to go Pearls were first and the Dolphins were second both with three wins.
Last round Pearls beat Mahurangi 20-15 and the Dolphins had their worst game going down to Takapuna 30-10.
The Pearls came out the overall winners, having 4 wins out of 5.
The Dolphins slipped to fourth place behind Takapuna and Mahurangi, with all three teams having 3 wins.
Well done to the Pearls, back to back wins although a different team on this occasion.
In the Men, there were four sections with the top two in each section qualifying for finals day.
Our teams were:
Sharks: Ian Coombe, Kevin Cameron, Gordon Jenkins and Allan Langley. David Payne replaced Ian Coombe on finals day.
Barracudas : Phil Chisholm, Kevin Robertson, John Lindsay and Graeme McGregor. Bruce McClintoch replaced John Lindsay on finals day.
Both teams played really well and qualified for finals.
In section play:
Barracudas defeated Beachaven 18-13, defeated Mahurangi East 26-16 and lost to Orewa 20-12.
Sharks defeated Browns Bay 33-7, defeated Birkenhead 19-15 and defeated Orewa 25-16.
Quarter finals.
Barracudas defeated Orewa 28-12 and the Sharks beat Beachaven 24-20.
Semi- finals.
Barracudas lost to Birkenhead 21-15 losing in the last end.
Sharks defeated Orewa 28-12 and set up a rematch of the final last year.
Final. This was a replay of last year’s final with almost identical teams.
The Sharks were quick out of the gates and had a 16-1 lead, there was a momentum shift for a few ends but the Sharks came out on top 25-14, and back to back wins. John Lindsay and Graeme McGregor played great bowls for the Barracudas. It was a great team effort by the Sharks, Allan and Gordon were strong up front, Kevin Cameron continued his great form and David Payne fitted in really well, saving the team on a few occasions.
