Hi Everyone, first update for 2023.
I hope you are all well and have survived the weather bomb in reasonable condition.
It was hard to imagine that we could see the main street in Mairangi Bay village flowing like a river, Countdown full of water and our club with so much damage.
Not sure we are going to see a summer in 2023.
We have a couple of 1 to 5 year bowlers who are badly affected by the flood and we wish them well with their issues.
Hopefully bowls will give them a nice release from their situations.
On a brighter note I would like to officially welcome the following new bowlers, Gary Warren, Steve Bartley, Graeme Storey and Barry Baillie. A BIG WELCOME TO YOU ALL and I wish you all the best in your endeavours to master the game of bowls.
Some people you need to know:
Our Club Captains – Phyl Humphries and Barry McCrystal. You can talk to them at any time if you have questions or concerns.
Our fully qualified Coaches – Ian Coombe and Theresa Rogers, assisted by Larry Cain and Brian Rogers.
Our Umpires – Jean Ashby, Lily Hinton, Raewyn Parker, Sheryl Wellington, Lorna Donald and Gerd Hutcheson.
Our Selectors – Leon Wech, Peter Orgias, Alan Daniels and Colleen Rice. You will need to impress these people (or pay) to make our selected teams.
We have our 1-5 any combination Pairs competition this weekend and have ten teams entered which is a great turnout.
Also coming up is the Men’s 1-5 Singles which has been rescheduled to Sat/Sun 4th/5th March.
We still await a date for the Women’s event.
The 1st Year Singles is scheduled for Sat/Sun 22nd/23rd April and we expect all our 1st year bowlers to participate.
The Bowls North Harbour 1-5 Singles Men and Women is scheduled for Sat/Sun 1st/2nd April, and the 1-5 any combination Pairs Sat/Sun 15th/16th April.
These events you can enter online on the Bowls North Harbour website. https://www.bowlsnorthharbour.com/competitions/
The 1-5 Year Interclub is scheduled for Sat/Sun 8th/9th April, Easter weekend.
The teams will be selected by our team of selectors. The selectors will ask for names closer to the event.
The club has two big tournaments coming up.
The first is the Founders Tournament Any Combination Triples on Wed/Thur 1st/2nd March.
The second is the Harcourt’s Classic Fours Thur/Fri 20th/21st April.
If you are not in a team but interested in playing in these two day tournaments, or even playing on one day of these tournaments, please contact Sandra Coombe. Her email is sandra@coombe.net.nz and her mobile is 0212931607.
The Pt Chev Bowling Club is running a 1-8 year classic fours tournament on the weekend 22nd/23rdApril. Details are on a flyer down in our clubroom.
We will be having a Rules and Etiquette session for all our 1-5 bowlers, to be run by our own umpire Jean Ashby. We now have to reschedule this event and I will come back to you with a new date.
I have attached a flyer promoting our 75th Gala dinner. Yes we are 75 years old and we are going to celebrate this with a Gala dinner, details on the flyer, please note the club is subsidising this event to make it more affordable for all.
More details to come.
Well it has been a difficult season for all involved in bowls, organisers, markers, umpires, administrators, tournament directors, greenkeepers and also the bowlers.
The good news is we only have two weeks left of this horrible and very ordinary Summer. March 1st is the start of Autumn hopefully this will bring us some warmer days, which we are overdue.
Stay dry.
Alan Daniels
Junior Convenor.
